I work on pressure relief valves for oil field wells. Are such valves used frequently in oil field wells?
Reply to 1# Mary has a lamb. The wellhead valve (pressure relief valve) is something that I think is installed in wells that produce oil through natural flow in the initial stage; wells that are now pumped using machinery don’t require a pressure relief valve.
Today, gas wells are equipped with gas nozzles (which provide pressure reduction but cannot be adjusted) and angular throttle valves (which regulate the opening degree of the valve to control pressure)

We used downhole throttle valves in our gas wells in the past, but later found that they tended to get clogged; now we generally use surface throttling instead
In the past, wellhead throttle valves were commonly used in gas well operations; they are still used today, but needle-type or angular throttle valves are generally not recommended, as they tend to develop internal leaks over time and cannot be closed tightly. Labyrinth-type throttle stop valves are more commonly used these days; you can look up relevant information.
