Honeywell announced that Huisheng (Nanjing) Clean Energy Co., Ltd. in China has chosen UOP technology to convert methanol in its existing coal chemical complex into raw materials for producing high-quality polycarbonols and other chemical products. This project will be the world’s first commercial application of Honeywell UOP’s Advanced Methanol-to-Olefins technology solution. The project is expected to come online at Huisheng Energy’s Nanjing plant in 2013, with Honeywell UOP providing technical licensing, process packages, catalysts, adsorbents, special equipment, and commissioning services. Liu Hongjun, General Manager of Huisheng (Nanjing) Clean Energy Co., Ltd., said, “Huisheng is pleased to collaborate with Honeywell UOP to build a world-class methanol-to-olefins unit using advanced methanol-to-olefins technology.” We look forward to the success of this technology at Sinopec’s Nanjing plant, as it will help Sinopec further extend its product supply chain, enabling the company to offer a wider range of high-quality chemical raw materials. It will also support the industrial application of this methanol conversion technology in China. ” Huisheng Energy’s Nanjing plant will be one of the first plants in the world to produce olefins from methanol; it is expected to generate 295,000 tons per year of ethylene and propylene intermediates, which will then be converted into other chemical products. The MTO process was jointly developed by UOP and INEOS (formerly Hydro) to convert methanol into ethylene and propylene. The olefin cracking process (OCP) is employed to further convert the olefins produced by the MTO process, thereby increasing the yield of available ethylene and propylene. This solution uses UOP’s proprietary catalysts, and it is reported to yield high outputs with few by-products ; It also allows for flexible adjustment of ethylene and propylene production volumes, enabling producers to adjust plant design to meet market demands most effectively. Total Petrochemicals has successfully demonstrated the semi-commercial-scale production of advanced MTO process technology at its plant in Feluy, Belgium. Total Petrochemicals and UOP recently announced that they have successfully converted the ethylene and propylene produced at the pilot plant into polyethylene and polypropylene. MTO is very similar to FCC; methanol is used in place of oil feedstock. I don’t think there’s a significant difference in their technologies. While Dahuaxing was trying to find places for pilot tests, UOP just watched from the sidelines. When Dahuaxing carried out pilot tests at Shaanxi Chemical Industry, UOP arrogantly waited for the results; by the time Dahuaxing succeeded in operating the plant in Baotou, it was already too late for UOP to act. If Huisheng were to adopt UOP’s technology, there might still be a slim chance of success, but I still think the prospects are not good; after all, Dahuo has the advantages of timing, location, and support.

Besides, UOP’s technology is too expensive and difficult to implement in practical applications. Their catalysts and reactors are excellent.
