Recently, the 5th College Students’ Chemical Engineering Design Competition 2011 began its preliminary rounds in seven regions across the country. The goal of this competition is to design an MTO/MTP plant for a coal-based chemical industry complex. The Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Xinxing New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., upon learning about the objectives of this competition, and in order to encourage independent innovation and provide a fair competitive platform for college students across the country, made the basic data related to the DMTO technology available publicly for the first time. They also provided multimedia animations illustrating DMTO technology for students to use as a reference for their designs. In addition, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics and Xinxing Company offered contact information for twelve mentors who were ready to provide guidance to students at any time. Given our country’s natural resource conditions, reducing the excessive reliance on petroleum resources for hydrocarbon-based chemical production is an important task for the sustainable development of our economy and society. Therefore, the development of production technologies for hydrocarbon raw materials derived from coal and gas resources has become a hot research area in China’s scientific and technological community. In light of this, the competition organizing committee set the design goal of the competition as designing an MTO/MTP plant for a comprehensive coal chemical enterprise. Upon learning of this, Emerging Energy Technology Co., Ltd. promptly provided background information on MTO as well as some technical details on DMTO for the participating students to use as reference; these materials can be downloaded from the download section on the organizing committee’s website. Xinxing Company has recently received many messages and phone inquiries from college students seeking information on DMTO technology. As the world’s first commercially validated methanol-to-olefins (DMTO) technology, it is the only technology in the entire process of Shenhua Baotou’s coal-to-olefins project that relies entirely on China’s own independent intellectual property. Therefore, Xinxing Company is well aware of the importance of independent innovation in advancing China’s international standing. Hence, the company, together with the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, promotes an innovative spirit and encourages college students to develop innovative thinking in order to contribute to the development of science and technology. This is the first time that the basic data on the Methanol-to-Olefins (DMTO) technology has been made public.
