In the desalinated water treatment process, the filter media of multi-media filters are usually composed of quartz sand and anthracite arranged in layers. I imagine what the expert is asking is whether there is any overlap in functionality between a multi-media filter and an activated carbon filter when the latter is placed after the former Is it possible to fill a multi-media filter only with quartz sand? What impact would this have on the backwashing cycle? Is it feasible to do so?
Mechanical filtration can remove suspended solids, colloids, organic matter, plankton, algae, bacteria. Activated carbon filters can remove active chlorine, color, iron and manganese ions, calcium and magnesium ions, as well as anionic ions. It is advisable to add a precision filter to retain quartz sand or activated carbon in case of leaks in the first two filters
The two serve different purposes; after using a multi-media filter, we use an activated carbon filter, and then a safety filter. It’s pretty much what was said above!
