The flame drying method is a commonly used drying technique. It utilizes the heat released by the flame generated from the combustion of fuel in the furnace, as well as the heat from the smoke produced, to gradually increase the temperature of the furnace, thereby achieving the purpose of drying the furnace walls. The fuel used for heating the furnace is usually wood and coal; wood is used for initial heating, while coal is then employed to gradually increase the temperature inside the furnace. A few days before heating the furnace, all the dampers and openings in the air ducts should be opened to allow natural ventilation, so that the furnace walls can dry out over several days and their moisture content can be reduced. For fire-resistant concrete walls, drying the furnace should only be carried out after the curing period has elapsed. The curing period for concrete made with bauxite cement is 3 days and nights, while that for Portland cement refractory concrete is 7 days and nights, in order to improve the baking effect. The flame baking method is generally carried out following these steps: (1) Open the furnace door, and spread slag with a thickness of 30–50 mm within a range of 1.5 m in front of the furnace grate. Place wood and other flammable materials on top of the slag. Open the natural ventilation door of the boiler, or the control valve of the air chamber, or the control damper of the exhaust fan. (2) After lighting the fire, add wood appropriately to allow the furnace chamber to heat up slowly. It is absolutely not allowed to add a large amount of wood, which could cause the furnace temperature to rise sharply and damage the furnace walls. The furnace should be dried continuously with wood for no less than 24 hours; when the furnace walls are moist or have a high moisture content, the drying time using wood should be extended. The drying time in a wood-burning oven is generally around 3 days. (3) Control of furnace heating temperature The combustion temperature of the furnace is controlled based on the temperature at the furnace outlet. The mature or original furnace drying curves of boilers of the same model can also be referred to. When burning wood can no longer raise the temperature at the furnace outlet, coal can be added as appropriate to heat the furnace; meanwhile, the grate as well as the supply and exhaust fans can be started to gradually increase the air supply volume, enhancing combustion and raising the flue gas temperature. For heavy furnace linings, the temperature rise on the first day shall not exceed 50°C, and thereafter the daily temperature rise shall not exceed 20°C. The maximum temperature at the end of furnace drying shall not exceed 220°C. For lightweight furnace walls, the temperature rise shall not exceed 80°C per day, and the maximum temperature at the end of the heating process shall not exceed 160°C. For refractory concrete furnace walls, the furnace must be dried only after the normal curing period has elapsed. The temperature rise shall not exceed 10°C per hour; the maximum temperature at the end of the drying process shall not exceed 160°C, and the drying time at this maximum temperature level shall be no less than 24 hours. (4) Control the combustion flame: During baking, the flame from wood or coal should be in the middle of the furnace, with even burning. For chain grills, they need to be rotated regularly to prevent damage. At the same time, temperature readings must be recorded on time, and attention should be paid to observing the expansion of the furnace body and the dryness of the furnace walls, so that any abnormalities can be addressed promptly. (5) Drying time: The number of days required for drying should, in principle, be determined based on factors such as the specific conditions of the furnace walls, the local climate conditions, and the number of days available for natural drying. The furnace drying time is generally 7 to 14 days. For furnace walls with different structures: for heavy-duty furnace walls, the drying time is generally 10 to 14 days ; For lightweight furnace walls, the heating time is generally 4 to 6 days ; The refractory concrete furnace wall is considered a lightweight furnace wall.
