I recently came across Borgmann’s dry gas seals while studying *, and I was wondering if anyone here could explain them in detail. Thank you.
The principle of dry gas seals is the same in all cases: the sealing surface of the rotating ring is fitted with spiral grooves, whose depth and width decrease gradually as one moves from the outer circle toward the inner circle, reaching zero near the inner ring. The direction of rotation and the helical pattern of the moving and stationary rings are in the same direction, from the inside out. When the dry gas seal is in operation, the external dry gas is forced into the helical grooves due to the high-speed relative movement between the moving and stationary rings. As the depth and width of these helical grooves decrease, the pressure of the dry gas between the rings increases, causing them to separate and a gas film to form; once the pressure is balanced, a stable seal is established. On the other hand, the leaked medium is carried away by the dry gas circuit. Dry gas seals are generally used in pairs or more at the same time to achieve zero leakage; this requires an external auxiliary system. The principle is quite simple: two types of dry gas can be used – the gas on the medium side can be the same as the medium itself, while nitrogen or similar gases can be used on the outside side. Of course, the cleanliness requirements for dry gas are also very high, and there are strict specifications for its process parameters; otherwise, the dry gas seals will fail or even get damaged.
