Since I’m new to this, I would like to use iron to remove copper from the waste liquid. I have the following questions: 1. If the acid equivalent in the waste liquid is too high, isn’t it uneconomical? It would require a large amount of iron. Is there any way to address this? Could part of the free acid be neutralized with alkali first? 2. Are there mature devices available for mass production? Are there any systematic materials available for reference? 3. What are the requirements for iron, and what are the common sources of iron used for substitution? I see that the forums all talk about using iron powder – will ordinary scrap iron work? After all, iron powder is more expensive. 4. Does anyone know the approximate cost: how many tons of iron are needed per ton of copper? 5. After the displacement is complete, is the remaining liquid still valuable? How should it be handled – disposed of as waste directly, or can the iron be recovered? 1: A high acid content is definitely not economical and unsafe. You can neutralize it with slurry. 2: A reaction tank equipped with wet-process equipment is sufficient. 3: The requirement for iron is that the amount of available iron must be high – at least 85% or more – in order to achieve a high displacement efficiency. (Available iron refers to elemental iron.) 4: The cost can be determined through experiments; a simple setup will suffice. Fe + Cu2+ → Fe2+ + Cu. 5: The remaining liquid generally should not be discarded; it should be sent to wastewater treatment facilities where it can be converted into iron slag. Its quality isn’t high enough to be useful elsewhere, but one could inquire with cement factories
We generally use bright steel sheet for the displacement process – steel with low carbon content and few impurities. The copper powder obtained as a result can be used directly to produce copper salts after processing. Generally, the pH level is lower in this case compared to aluminum displacement, and about 1.2 tons of steel sheet are required per ton of copper produced
