Our company distributes materials needed at the production site according to a plan, one or two working days in advance, to the workshops. Due to the limited space in the production workshops, which is quite crowded, the used materials are not returned to the warehouse in a timely manner, resulting in an accumulation of materials on site. The question now is whether it is possible to return the materials from the site promptly, returning them as soon as they are used and retrieving new ones only when needed, thereby ensuring no materials are left on site. Could this lead to an increased workload for the material handlers in the workshops and the warehouse staff, requiring more employees? Would the process of material circulation become more complicated? Let’s discuss whether it’s possible to achieve zero inventory on the site at your company
It’s simply a management issue. A better approach is to make the warehouse logistics-based. It’s about treating the warehouse as materials and the workshop as customers. Then the Quality Department takes overall control. When the materials in the workshop are used up, a return form should be filled out, and the warehouse should arrive at the site to clear the materials within 1 hour (the time frame may vary depending on actual circumstances). If the warehouse fails to arrive at the site within the specified time, or fails to transport the remaining materials to the warehouse within the given timeframe, the warehouse shall be held responsible. If the workshop fails to fill out the form in a timely manner or notify the warehouse to return the materials, the workshop shall be held responsible. These matters are supervised in coordination by the Quality Department.
