Can a thermometer for the storage tank be installed on the top of the tank??

As the title suggests, since there are no pre-existing holes at the bottom of the old tank for installing a thermometer, it is planned to install the thermometer on the top of the tank, without altering the tank itself... Due to the gas-liquid equilibrium... I think this is feasible. I wonder if anyone else has designed it this way as well??
It wasn’t expressed clearly – is it to measure atmospheric temperature? The liquid phase can be measured with top loading, but the insertion depth needs to be increased.
Many thermal resistors are installed on the top of the tank. However, as mentioned on the second floor, the temperature probe needs to have sufficient insertion depth
