This project has demonstrated the industrial feasibility of converting methanol into important petrochemical raw materials such as ethylene and propylene, thereby opening up a new coal-based chemical technology route for producing polyolefins and providing a new approach to ensuring energy security through the indirect substitution of oil. On December 31, 2010, the Shenhua Baotou coal-to-olefins project **completed its commissioning trial run. It entered commercial operation on January 1, 2011, during which time all the main production units of the plant operated at a high load of over 85%. The combined chemical plants, the combined petrochemical plants, as well as the utility and heat-and-power systems, all functioned well in commercial operation. The main products include the polyethylene resin series (PE) and the polypropylene resin series (PP); the polyethylene resin series (PE) comprises 7 categories such as high-density (HD) large-part blow molding, while the polypropylene resin series (PP) includes 5 categories such as flat filaments and fibers. As of June 30, the Shenhua Baotou coal-to-olefins project had produced a total of 891,500 tons of methanol and 273,040 tons of polyolefin products. The by-products included 46,000 tons of mixed C4 compounds, 18,000 tons of mixed C5 compounds, and 5,300 tons of sulfur. A total of 263,290 tons of polyolefin products were sold, along with 921 tons of propylene ； 46,610 tons of mixed C4 by-products, 19,070 tons of mixed C5 by-products, and 5,280 tons of sulfur were sold.
