Why was a ring similar to a comb-tooth seal installed instead of a labyrinth seal during the commissioning of the compressor before its initial operation?
During single testing, install a temporary comb-tooth seal

That is just a temporary test sealing solution, as the operating conditions and the medium used during testing cannot be guaranteed to be optimal, and dry gas seals have high requirements in terms of these factors; therefore, dry gas seals can only be installed after the testing process has stabilized. Personal opinion, for reference only.
During testing, there may be no auxiliary nitrogen on site; therefore, it is not possible to provide the required primary sealing gas for the dry gas seal, as well as the secondary and isolation gases. Secondly, there are uncertainties during testing, and in order to prevent damage to the seal, the dry gas seal is not installed. Thirdly, the air used during testing can be dirty, and installing such air could lead to damage to the seal, so it is also not feasible to use it. Oil leakage may occur during the unit’s operation; to prevent contamination of the seals, dry gas is not used, and this is the fourth point.
Reply to 1# Fan Wubin: It is mainly to prevent damage to the dry gas seal caused by abnormal operation of the compressor during testing; therefore, a test seal is used first during the testing process.
The original unit was extremely unstable during operation: 1. vibration, 2. the air intake volume of the engine, 3. impurities in the sealing system… any of these could cause serious damage to the components of the dry gas seal. (Dry gas seals are commonly controlled using differential pressure; nevertheless, during startup, the highly unstable air intake volume of the unit still needs to be taken into account.) )

Everything said upstairs is correct. In general, dry gas seals are just too expensive. During the initial purging or commissioning phase, the rotor starts and stops repeatedly, and its operating condition isn’t very stable; this makes it easy for the seal to get scratched. Once it’s damaged, another set has to be purchased... No one can afford that, haha
What you’re referring to is a test-run seal; since the operating conditions during testing are different from those under normal operation, dry gas seals cannot be used, as this would easily damage them. You should be aware of the price of a set of dry gas seals as well
