Static grounding is required in any hazardous area where factors that can create an ignition source exist, or where stray spark currents are present. The function of static grounding is to allow the static electric charges that accumulate on pipes, equipment, or materials – especially those accumulated charges – to be discharged into the ground through the static grounding circuit, thereby creating an equipotential condition. In this way, no discharge occurs, and there is no source of ignition. Due to the different material properties of substances that accumulate static electricity, leakage can occur unevenly; static grounding is merely a basic necessity, and other measures must also be taken based on on-site analysis. As for the specific standards, there are those mentioned above, industry standards, national standards, as well as NFPA 77 and 5046.
