The first step in tar refining is deasphalting; as for desulfurization and denitration, I haven’t carried out those tasks, and it seems they aren’t necessary either.

Most of the asphaltenes and resins in coal tar can be removed through the delayed coking process. For desulfurization and denitrification, hydrogenation refining and hydrocracking processes are required; however, given the characteristics of coal tar, high-pressure hydrogenation is necessary to achieve these goals, which imposes stringent requirements on both the equipment and the processing methods
The two small plants I operate are used for deasphalting; this process relies on temperature (around 200–300°C), with the gas at the top of the tower being light tar, while the components at the bottom of the tower are asphalt
