The lateral expansion amount is the lateral increase that occurs on both sides of the back of the notch in the specimen during impact testing, as a result of the impact force applied during such testing. The measurement method is specified in GB/T12778-2008.

During impact testing, it refers to the increase in lateral expansion on both sides of the back of the notch in the impact specimen, resulting from the impact force applied during the test. This is the lateral expansion amount. The lateral expansion amount is closely related to the toughness of the material. When the impact specimen is fractured, the greater the impact energy, the greater the lateral expansion ; When the impact energy is low, the lateral expansion is not significant.
