The recommended ice penetration apparatus consists of a 1/2-inch x 2-inch x 8-inch (1.25 cm x 5.08 cm x 20.32 cm) Ple*glas® plate cemented to a base that is 1 1/12 inches (3.81 cm) wide, 1/4 inch (0.635 cm) thick, and 8 inches (20.32 cm) long, with the 2-inch (5.08 cm) dimension being in a vertical position. Ten cavities 35 mm deep are drilled in the center of the plate at intervals of 17 mm each, using a 5/32-inch drill. These cavities are then enlarged in a countersink manner to create a cone-shaped surface with a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 5 mm at the point where the cone intersects the 5/32-inch cavity. In other words, ten holes are drilled in the Plexiglas plate; each hole is 35 mm deep, and its diameter corresponds to that of the drill bit, which is 5/32 inch (1 inch equals 2.54 cm), so the hole diameter is 0.4 cm (2.54 x 5/32 = 0.4 cm). Each hole is further enlarged to form a cone with a diameter of 10 mm. What does “5 mm long” refer to in this context? How should the text in red be translated?
5 mm long at the point of intersection of the cone with the 5/32-in cavity. The height at the intersection of the cone and the 5/32-inch cavity is 5 mm.
Each opening was expanded to form a cone with a diameter of 10 mm, and a height of 5 mm at the point where the cone meets the opening; It’s just my personal understanding; please share your insights
Obviously, this is intended for set screws (studs). We know that the bit head is conical, with a cone angle of 120 degrees. Understand this sentence as follows: First, drill a hole with a diameter of 0.4 cm, and then use a drill bit with a diameter of 10 mm to drill further into that 0.4 cm hole; the resulting conical hole has a height of 5 mm, and this is referred to as a counterbored hole. To put it another way: this hole eventually functions like a funnel, with its conical portion having a height of 5 mm.
