I don’t yet know very much about registered engineers, but this year I took the basic exam for registered chemical engineers. During the review process, I realized that there is a significant difference between the content in engineering textbooks and what is taught in classes; sometimes I also had doubts regarding the way things are expressed. At the same time, I understood that I couldn’t neglect either work experience or theoretical preparation, yet preparing for the theoretical exams would inevitably affect my actual work. How do people resolve these conflicts?
Engineering design guidebooks, such as the Chemical Engineering Design Handbook and various codes, are also guidance manuals derived from the basic theories of chemical unit operations, combined with practical considerations in engineering design and project operation; such manuals offer greater reliability in terms of feasibility. The basic subjects for registering as a chemical engineer are essentially the fundamental theoretical courses studied during university, representing pure theoretical knowledge. From a philosophical perspective: practice—knowledge (theory)—guiding theory. Although learning the knowledge of these basic subjects does not directly help improve chemical engineering design skills, it can enhance our understanding of these theoretical concepts through practice.
