The function of one return and one discharge in a compressor

It was found that several PID diagrams share one common feature: in each case, a line runs from the primary outlet of both the refrigerant compressor and the nitrogen compressor back to the buffer tank in front of the compressor. Is this what is referred to as a \"one-return-one\" configuration? I don’t understand what specific function this line has The above situation is likely to occur in reciprocating compressors; centrifugal compressors suffer from surge. I would also like to ask how surge in compressors is generally prevented? Thank you!
Both positive-displacement and velocity types have check valves; if there are more compression stages, there will be more check valves. It is generally called an inlet pressure control valve, or a multi-stage feedback valve.
