Ili coal-to-natural gas project boosts the West-to-East Gas Transmission project

Ili is one of the seven coal chemical industry bases identified in China, and it is also one of the four key coal chemical industry bases that will be developed in Xinjiang in the future. The estimated reserves of coal resources there amount to 477 billion tons. With domestic large-scale energy companies such as Qinghua Group and Xinwen Group setting up operations in Ili, a development framework for producing 30 billion cubic meters of coal-based natural gas per year has been established in the region. At the project site of Yili Energy Company, part of Xinwen Mining Group, journalists from Zhejiang Online saw a modern coal chemical and energy complex emerging in the Gobi Desert. The 2 billion cubic meter coal-to-natural gas project is a **pilot project, and infrastructure construction for it is underway intensively in the vast Gobi Desert. It is reported that the project is scheduled to go into operation in June 2013, with an estimated total investment of 12 billion yuan; in the future, the products will be transported across the country via the **West-East Gas Pipeline. The Xinjiang Qinghua Coal Chemical Circular Economy Industrial Park, located in the Yidong Industrial Park of Yining County, is centered around a coal-to-natural gas project with an annual production capacity of 5.5 billion cubic meters. It also includes facilities for the hydrogenation of 600,000 tons of coal tar, an ammonia synthesis plant, a combined heat and power plant, as well as a cement production facility that can manufacture 2 million tons of cement per year from fly ash. The total investment in the construction of Qinghua Energy Group’s coal-to-gas project amounts to 27.8 billion yuan. All of the coal-derived natural gas produced will be fed into the **West-East Gas Transmission main pipeline, providing clean energy to the central and eastern regions, including Zhejiang.
