I would like to ask everyone: in the process of producing desalinated water, the raw water first undergoes pretreatment before entering the ultrafiltration unit, then passes through a safety filter, and finally goes through a two-stage reverse osmosis system and an EDI system. What I want to ask is: the micropores of the ultrafiltration membranes in ultrafiltration systems can be as small as below 0.01 um, while the filtration efficiency of safety filters is less than 5 um. Why is a safety filter installed between the ultrafiltration unit and the reverse osmosis system? Does it have some other function? As a recent graduate, there are many things I don’t understand; I’m ashamed.
In the production of pure water or ultrapure water, the operation of the RO system is crucial, and the RO membrane is a key component that can be easily damaged. Therefore, a protective device (a pre-filter, which, as the name suggests, serves a protective purpose) is installed at its inlet to prevent such damage!
I’m also puzzled: the security filter has a particle size that is much larger than that of the ultrafiltration device, so how does this constitute a security measure? :sleepy:
We don’t have ultrafiltration; the safety filter is installed between the activated carbon tank and the reverse osmosis system.

The function of the pre-filter is to trap or adsorb residual trace suspended particles, colloids, microorganisms, etc. in the water on the surface and within the pores of the filter elements, thereby creating favorable conditions for the operation of the reverse osmosis membrane
1. Ultrafiltration has a high filtration precision, while the safety filter has a lower precision; the latter cannot replace the former. 2. The safety filter serves as a short-term compensation to improve the filtration precision relative to that of the unfiltered medium when ultrafiltration fails (mainly due to breakdown), thereby preventing large amounts of contaminants from entering the downstream clean systems. 3. The safety filter must be used after ultrafiltration. Filtering is set up before ultrafiltration; its function is rough (primary) filtration, and it serves to extend the operating cycle of ultrafiltration. Having a different role, it cannot be referred to as a safety measure.
