The petroleum pipeline design manual states that the straight sections of the gas pipe should lead out from or into the main pipe from above; however, to prevent impurities from entering the equipment, pumps, and control instruments, it is advisable for such straight sections to lead out from or into the main pipe from the side or above. Why introduce or converge from above.

The branch pipes of gas pipelines should lead out from above or merge into the main pipe, in order to prevent impurities (including liquids) from entering or exiting. In applications where steam is involved, it is common to have the steam branch pipes lead out from above the main pipe, so as to avoid condensate from entering those branches. Similarly, the air exhaust branch pipes are installed at a 45-degree angle above the direction of flow in the main pipe; this is also done to prevent impurities from the branch pipes from reaching the main pipe, and the 45-degree angle helps to reduce backpressure of the gas.
