It is said that the reaction products of coal contain about 2% organic acid gases (a mixture of formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, etc.). From what I’ve found, these organic acids have a high corrosion rate in liquid form or in aqueous solutions; at least grade 304 steel is required to resist such corrosion. So what about their corrosion rate in gaseous form? For example, at a temperature of 230 degrees Celsius? I wonder if ordinary carbon steel can resist corrosion in such an environment Solved it, thank you!
Many studies I’ve reviewed state that it has strong corrosivity in liquid form or in aqueous solutions; however, no information on its corrosivity in gaseous state could be found

Reply to 3# tg0727000478: From what I’ve read, liquid organic acids or their aqueous solutions cause quite severe corrosion of carbon steel. I’m not sure about the situation in the gas phase. Both gaseous and liquid H2S are corrosive; I’m not sure how that works in this case...
Reply 1# zrl05: There is no corrosion if there is no water! Acid corrosion relies mainly on the ionization of water to produce corrosive ions! So it certainly won’t corrode, but acidic gases generally contain a high amount of water; therefore, the materials chosen for design should be considered in terms of their behavior as liquids! Personal opinions are for reference only
For any design institute that claims there is no need to consider the issue of corrosion caused by acidic gases, I suggest that corrosion should still be taken into account; corrosion problems do exist in actual use. In fact, the view expressed on the 5th floor is the more correct one!
