Generally, when the residual carbon content is below 23, the likelihood of pellet coke formation is low. The occurrence of pellet coke is related to residual carbon, but the key factor is the pitch content in the raw material; if this pitch content is above 10, the probability of pellet coke formation increases. The temperature at the furnace outlet can be reduced appropriately, down to 470 degrees at the very least, but this does not necessarily prevent the formation of pellet coke
We have experienced pellet coking when the residual carbon in our raw materials was around 18. The raw material has a high content of asphaltenes.
There is no direct inherent connection between residue and the furnace outlet temperature; it mainly depends on the composition of the oil. Generally speaking (when the coking feed is pure residue with no other oils added), the higher the residue level, the higher the temperature at the furnace outlet. We maintain this temperature at 490–496°C, and it is adjusted according to the type of feed used. Only when producing pellet coke is the furnace outlet temperature reduced to below 490°C℃
