According to news from August 2011, the technology development project for producing aromatics from coal-based methanol, developed in collaboration between the Research Institute of Henan Coal Chemical Group and Beijing University of Chemical Technology, has recently passed its mid-term evaluation. Since the launch of this project last June, the Research Institute of Henan Coal Chemical Group and Beijing University of Chemical Technology have conducted extensive research on topics related to the improvement of the performance of catalysts used for methanol aromatization, the development of processes for xylene isomerization and benzene serta toluene alkylation, as well as the design of processes for producing aromatics from coal-based methanol. Significant progress has been achieved in these areas. This project identified the optimal catalyst and suitable process conditions for the reaction, proposed the scale of the facility, the preliminary design of the reactor, and the parameters for key equipment, thereby establishing a relatively complete technology for producing aromatics from coal-based methanol. All technical specifications have met the expected goals; indicators such as the catalyst’s single-pass lifetime and the benzene alkylation conversion rate have exceeded expectations and reached high levels. It seems that it will take a considerable amount of time before coal-based aromatics can be industrialized. But exploration is meaningful.
The road is still long; it will take some time before true pilot-scale production of units at the 10,000-ton level is achieved. Are such projects reasonable? I have always been skeptical.
