Uses of H12MDI: It can be used to produce polyurethane products that do not yellow over time; it is suitable for manufacturing polyurethane materials with excellent light stability, weather resistance, and mechanical properties. It is particularly useful in the production of polyurethane elastomers, water-based polyurethanes, fabric coatings, and radiation-cured polyurethane acrylate coatings. In addition to its excellent mechanical properties, H12MDI also confers outstanding hydrolysis resistance and chemical resistance to the resulting products. Bayer’s H12MDI: used for UV curing, for high-quality applications where yellowing resistance is important, in water-based polyurethanes (PU), for curing in humid conditions, in synthetic leather, as a coating agent for leather, in bras and cushions, for surface treatments, in RIM polyurethanes, and for coating fabrics. Overview of TDI: Toluene diisocyanate, abbreviated as TDI. TDI has two isomers: 2,4-TDI and 2,6-TDI. The industrial product is mainly a mixture in a mass ratio of 80:20 (TDI-80 or TDI-80/20), as well as pure 2,4-TDI (also known as TDI-100) and TDI-65 (a mixture of the two isomers in a mass ratio of 65:35). The CAS number for TDI (a mixture of isomers) is 26471-62-5; the CAS number for 2,4-TDI is 584-84-9, and the CAS number for 2,6-TDI is 91-08-7. At room temperature, TDI is a transparent liquid that is colorless or pale yellow, with a distinctive pungent odor; its color deepens when exposed to light. Insoluble in water, soluble in propane, ethyl acetate, toluene, and halogenated hydrocarbons. TDI-80 will form white crystals when stored at temperatures below 10°C. The TDI product of Dow Chemical is branded as Voranate T-80. BASF’s product with the grade Lupranate T80-2 is a high-acidity TDI product. KFC Korea’s TDI-100 has a TDI purity of ≥99.7%, 2,4-TDI content of ≥98%, 2,6-TDI content of ≤2%, acidity (HCl) of ≤0.002%, hydrolyzed chlorides of ≤0.005%, and total chloride content of ≤0.018%. Special and application-specific toluene diisocyanate is the most important diisocyanate product for polyurethane synthesis, and it is widely used in soft polyurethane foams, coatings, elastomers, adhesives, sealants, and other polyurethane products. TDI is an aromatic diisocyanate with higher reactivity than softer aliphatic isocyanates. TDI itself and its polyurethane products tend to yellow when exposed to natural light over time. The NCO groups present in TDI are highly reactive and readily react with water, alcohols, amines, etc.; under certain conditions they can undergo self-polymerization. These reactions can be catalyzed by basic substances and many transition metal compounds. Improper handling can lead to rapid heat release and temperature increases, resulting in quality or safety hazards, so care must be taken. Among TDI industrial products, TDI-80 is the most widely used and in the largest quantities; TDI-100 has a regular structure and can be used to synthesize special prepolymers, primarily for polyurethane elastomers ; TDI-65 is mainly used in polyester polyurethane foam plastics and similar materials.
