How to distinguish between titanium and stainless steel

Today in the workshop I saw a coil that appeared to be made of stainless steel, but an experienced worker said, “It’s made of titanium; generally, the inner coils are made of titanium.” I would like to ask: aren’t stainless steel and titanium materials quite similar? How can they be distinguished? Thank you!
