Could anyone explain why Shanxi is the main production area for phosphoric acid fertilizers and calcium nitrate? I’ve looked up relevant information – there are many areas where mirabilite is produced, but those are mainly in Qinghai, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia and other places, which are not near Shanxi. So why is it that products like calcium nitrate are only manufactured in Shanxi, with almost no production in other provinces?
Reasons for the development history. Shanhua was one of the earlier manufacturers to produce this product. It seems that calcium nitrate products have little to do with mirabilite ore.
Reply to 1# wsk0318: Phosphoric nitrate fertilizer production does not use mirabilite; instead, nitric acid is used. This is because Shanxi has the largest in the country – a production facility for nitrate phosphate fertilizers built using foreign technology and the largest of its kind in Asia. Its annual output of nitrate phosphate compound fertilizers is only one million tons; this facility was formerly the Shanxi Fertilizer Factory, and is now known as Tianji Chemical Company. As for the *ao acid an calcium compound fertilizer, due to the abundant calcium resources in Shanxi, existing small nitrogen fertilizer plants have been converted to produce nitric acid; by reacting this with calcium, *ao acid an calcium can be manufactured, offering the advantage of lower costs. Furthermore, Shanxi started developing calcium formate early on, which has also enabled it to gain a relative industrial advantage.
