If you’ve been through it, this will probably come as no surprise. Divorce can add years to a person’s face, it is claimed. Researchers found that the breakdown of a marriage can have a significant impact on one’s appearance. They studied identical twins, who are genetically predisposed to age at a similar rate, in order to determine whether certain life experiences affect the aging process. “A person’s genetics may initially determine how they age, but if certain factors are introduced into their life, they will age more quickly; conversely, avoiding such factors can help slow down the aging process,” said Professor Bahaman Guyuron, who led the study. Professor Guyuron and his colleagues collected data from questionnaires and digital images of 186 pairs of twins. An independent panel of judges then examined these images to assess any perceived age differences between the twins. The results showed that the twin who had gone through a divorce appeared two years older than those who were married, single, or widowed. Those who took antidepressants or were overweight also aged more quickly. It is believed that antidepressants can cause facial muscles to relax, leading to sagging over time. The research was conducted by Case Western Reserve University in the U.S., and its findings were published in the Journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Sun exposure, smoking, and alcohol consumption were all found to have a negative effect on appearance. If you’ve already experienced this, you likely won’t be surprised. Recent studies have suggested that divorce can make one’s appearance age faster. Researchers have found that the breakdown of a marriage can have a significant impact on a person’s appearance. To determine whether certain life experiences affect the aging process, researchers studied identical twins, who, due to their identical genetic makeup, age at exactly the same rate. Professor Bahman Gholamian, the lead researcher, said: “Genetics may be the key factor determining how a person ages, but if certain factors are introduced into one’s life, they will definitely accelerate aging; likewise, avoiding such factors will slow down aging.” ” Professor Gulyun and his colleagues conducted questionnaires and digital photography on 186 pairs of twins. Afterward, an independent review panel examined these photos and determined the apparent age difference between the twins based on them. The results showed that the divorced twin appeared two years older than those who were married, single, or widowed. The study also found that those taking antidepressants or who are overweight age more rapidly as well. It is said that antidepressants can relax facial muscles, so those who take them for a long time are prone to muscle sagging.
