On August 31, 2011, it was learned that the **Ministry of Science and Technology issued the \"Notice on the Approval of Projects under the Key Basic Research Development Plan for 2011–2012\" (Guo Ke Fa Ji [2011] No. 383), officially approving the 973 Program project titled \"Basic Research on the Large-Scale Improvement of the Quality of Low-Quality Coal\", with Academician Liu Jiongtian from China University of Mining and Technology as the lead scientist and the university as the primary entity responsible for carrying out this project. Addressing the poor quality of coal resources in China, as well as the fact that low-quality coal accounts for approximately 40% of the total coal reserves, this project focuses on three key scientific issues: the distribution and chemical and physical behavior of impurities such as minerals, sulfur, and water in low-quality coal; the energy mechanisms involved in the removal of these impurities; and the fundamentals of fluidization and process dynamics related to the large-scale upgrading of low-quality coal. It aims to achieve theoretical innovations in areas such as the distribution of impurities in coal, the interface control and dynamic mechanisms involved in their removal, as well as the fundamentals of fluidization and process dynamics. Additionally, it seeks to make breakthroughs in key technologies for the efficient removal of ash, water, and sulfur from coal. The project brings together the superior resources of 12 research institutions, including China University of Mining and Technology, Zhejiang University, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), Anhui University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xishan Coal and Electricity Group, and China Huaneng Group. By building on the intersections between fields such as coal separation and processing, coal chemistry, quantum chemistry, and coal combustion, it will create new research directions for the large-scale improvement of the quality of low-quality coal, thereby promoting the development of related disciplines.
