If gas protection is not provided during the shutdown and maintenance of the device, the oxygen in the air will neutralize with hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide to form a corrosive medium of polythionic acid. Such corrosive medium has strong pitting corrosion and stress corrosion characteristics. Generally, 304, 321, 316L and other stainless steels are often in good condition before the shutdown, but after the shutdown for maintenance, a large number of leaks occur. Stainless steel materials that are resistant to polythionosulfate require niobium-added stainless steel, that is, TP347. Therefore, during shutdown and maintenance, nitrogen protection is the best measure. :P:P

The top of the raw oil tank of the hydrogenation unit is generally protected by nitrogen (or other i gas) to isolate the air and prevent the raw oil from oxidizing and forming floc, which will generate cutin in subsequent equipment and pipelines and increase the system pressure drop. In addition, it is also to increase the pressure at the pump inlet and improve the cavitation condition of the pump inlet.
