What is the most suitable extractant for recovering dichloropropanol dissolved in water? Thank you!
Reply to 1# fmch6605: It should dissolve in water, as it has a high polarity and dissolves in polar solvents. Monopolar solvents should also allow it to dissolve in water, while its solubility in nonpolar solvents is low. However, the distribution coefficient of dichloropropanol in such solvents is very low. The cause should be sought in the manufacturing process; after the reaction is complete, use less water during neutralization, and try raising the temperature of the separated layers to see if it can help remove some of the dichloropropanol. Or after the reaction is complete, raise the temperature slightly, pass nitrogen through to carry away the chlorine produced as a byproduct of the reaction; no neutralization is needed, and distillation can be attempted directly.
You can try extracting it with chlorobenzene or dichloropropane.
Try using a non-polar solvent; the water-to-agent ratio can be higher
Find one with low solubility in water and high solubility in dichloropropanol; you’ll have to look up information and conduct experiments on your own.
