There is a reaction in which concentrated sulfuric acid is used as a catalyst; the reaction takes place in an ice bath. After the reaction is complete, it is quenched with ice water. What does this ice water quenching mean?
It should be about adding ice water to turn concentrated sulfuric acid into dilute sulfuric acid; it’s not about catalysis. I don’t think it’s necessary to understand the exact meaning of a phrase; knowing its general meaning from the context is sufficient.
Hehe, I’ve done a similar experiment: I placed the beaker in an ice-water bath, added ice to the beaker as well, and then slowly added concentrated sulfuric acid using a dropper; I guess that’s how it’s done
