What are the consequences if the seal water supply to a centrifugal pump is interrupted? Will the pump’s seal fail?
When the sealing water is cut off, dry friction occurs between the end faces of the stationary and rotating seal rings, which leads to rapid burning out. The sealing water must under no circumstances be interrupted.
Mechanical seals must not be run dry – smoke appears in less than two minutes at a speed of 2,900 revolutions per minute.
When the sealing water is cut off, the temperature at the seal point rises rapidly, which can burn out the packing or mechanical seal at that location, resulting in leakage at the pump’s shaft seal.
It is related to the pressure, temperature, and properties of the conveying medium; it’s possible that no problems will arise, but it’s also possible that the system will stop operating immediately or even an accident could occur!
If the pump pressure is below 0.4 MPa and the flow rate is not high either, what serious consequences could arise if the sealing water is cut off?

Sealing by burning is basically a certainty
It might burn out quickly, it might not have much of an impact, or it might only affect the lifespan. This is related to factors such as pump speed, the structural design of the pump, the pressure in the sealing chamber, the structural design of the seal, the material chosen for the seal, and the medium being transported.

There is dry friction between the rotating and stationary rings; if the rotating and stationary rings are made of graphite, (when clean water is being transported) a milky-white liquid will splash out, resulting in leakage at the mechanical seal.
