In the A2O process, when the water inflow is insufficient, should aeration take place after water is introduced, or simultaneously with water inflow? Additionally, our secondary sedimentation tank has suddenly turned dark, with a large number of bubbles appearing, and small pieces of black sludge are floating to the surface. What could be the cause? Thank you
For intermittent aeration, generally, water is introduced first and then aeration takes place. The secondary sedimentation tank has anaerobic sludge formed because some of the sludge has not been removed for a long time. Increase the sludge discharge volume and frequency, or simply clean the secondary sedimentation tank. It would be best to have more detailed information in order to find a more direct approach. For example, the tank volume, tank shape, water retention time, whether the secondary sedimentation tank is of tank-type or buried type, and the sludge discharge method, etc
When there is a shortage of wastewater source, the aeration time and amount can be appropriately reduced according to the actual situation; additionally, it is possible to consider adding some carbon source and starting aeration after the water is introduced. Regarding the problems in the secondary sedimentation tank, I agree with the person above – sludge recirculation must be properly managed.

If the water volume is insufficient, water can be added intermittently and aeration can be carried out, or both the water volume and the aeration rate can be reduced. The darkening of the sludge in the secondary sedimentation tank along with the appearance of small bubbles indicates a lack of oxygen, caused by anaerobic conditions; therefore, the aeration rate in the aerobic tank is being increased.
