Can hydraulic metering diaphragm pumps experience cavitation? I think positive-displacement pumps won’t, that’s what everyone thinks.
Positive displacement pumps can also suffer from cavitation, as negative pressure is generated at the pump’s inlet as well. Negative pressure causes gas to boil, and cavitation in positive displacement pumps is also very dangerous. It can easily cause damage to the diaphragm and check valve of the hydraulic diaphragm pump. Each manufacturer has figures for the net positive suction head, but they are not made public like those for centrifugal pumps.

Cavitation occurs when the feed pressure is lower than the saturated vapor pressure of the material at a certain temperature, resulting in the formation of bubbles that cause localized erosion. Therefore, in certain conditions, the local pressure in a positive displacement pump can also be lower than the vapor pressure of the material.
Hydraulic metering diaphragm pumps can experience cavitation, but in most cases this effect is negligible due to the small amount of cavitation that occurs.
