According to GB50316, flexible analysis is required for pipelines whose design temperature is 100 degrees or higher. In a project I’m working on currently, the foreigners have specified that the design temperature for many of the media is quite high (above 100 degrees), but the operating temperature of these media is relatively low (40–60 degrees). Do these pipes require stress calculation (should the pipe stress calculation be based on the design temperature or the operating temperature)?
First of all, I would like to clarify that flexible computing and stress analysis are two different concepts. According to regulations, stress considerations must be taken into account for all pressure pipelines; however, for some pipelines, a detailed stress analysis is not necessary, and simple methods such as visual inspection or graphical analysis are sufficient. For other pipelines, specialized software is required to carry out detailed stress calculations. The range of pipelines that require flexible analysis is not very wide; various organizations have their own regulations, such as those applicable to turbine pipelines. As for the temperature issue, whether it refers to the design temperature or the operating temperature, uniform regulations must be followed. Generally, larger projects have strict rules in this regard. If you’re not sure, you can adopt the following approach: use the design temperature to assess stresses, and take the highest possible operating temperature as the basis for designing components such as fixed supports and nozzles that require certain return conditions. Because the difference between the design temperature and the operating temperature can be significant, relying solely on the design temperature can result in excessive investment costs for the project. , causing waste.
