Which is produced in larger amounts from methanol reaction: propylene or ethylene?
This process is not yet mature and is still in the experimental stage. Foreign technologies are already advanced; they use fluidized beds, achieving a methanol conversion rate of 99%. In China, fixed-bed reactors are still used, with an ethylene yield of around 35% and an propylene yield of around 45%; the remainder is light oil.
The process is mature; it depends on what products are needed downstream in your facility – propylene or ethylene can be used, though the catalysts differ. The technology comes from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics and UOP

The methanol-to-olefins process is already well-developed; by selecting appropriate process conditions and catalysts, it is possible to produce products primarily consisting of ethylene or propylene. Since the reaction for producing olefins from methanol involves both condensation and pyrolysis from a mechanistic perspective, it is inevitable that some by-products are generated due to the thermodynamic principles of chemical reactions.
