Unstable baselines can also manifest in various ways: pure noise, continuous upward drift, continuous downward drift, periodic changes, and irregular large disturbances. The sources of baseline instability can be the mobile phase, the detector, temperature fluctuations, pump variations, contamination of valves or the column, or electrical interference, among others. No matter how skilled a doctor is, they can’t treat patients who only say they are sick without being able to describe their symptoms – how can anyone else then diagnose them?
