Is there a difference between reinforcement plates and reinforcement rings?
Strengthening with a reinforcement ring refers to welding a steel plate around the opening in the housing, namely the reinforcement ring. The reinforcement ring generally adopts a lap structure with the vessel wall, and its material is the same as that of the vessel wall. Stiffening with reinforcement plates is an important form of local stiffening for pressure vessels. There are also certain differences in the scope of application and the specific requirements for restrictions regarding the lap-welded structures of reinforcement rings and reinforcement plates.
I’m not sure if there are any design specifications for reinforcement plates; they are similar to reinforcement rings.
Strengthening rings are generally used in storage tanks; when such rings are employed, the wall thickness can be appropriately reduced during the design of the tank； Reinforcement plates are mainly used to enhance strength at areas where the container has openings or where lifting forces act.
