.dwg files from version 2007 and later are different from those from versions prior to 2007; older versions cannot open .dwg files from version 2007 and later. Autodesk’s upgraded product AutoCAD 2008 (codenamed Spago) introduces improvements to the interface, workspaces, panels, palettes, graphic management, layers, and more. Below is a detailed introduction to the features of AutoCAD 2008. Manage workspaces: The new workspace provides direct access to the 2D sketching and annotation tools that users use most frequently. It includes menus, toolbars and tool palettes, as well as panels. The 2D sketch and annotation workspaces are provided in CUI files so that users can easily integrate them into their own custom interfaces. In addition to the new 2D sketch and annotation workspaces, the 3D modeling workspace has also seen some enhancements. AutoCAD 2008 Workspace Panels: Panels introduced in AutoCAD 2007, with further enhancements in this version. It includes 9 new consoles that provide easier access to various controls such as layers, annotation scales, text, labels, various arrow types, tables, 2D navigation, object properties, and block properties. There is another automated feature in the user interface: when a user selects a tool from the panel, if the selected panel console corresponds to a tool palette group, the tool palette will automatically display that group. For example, if a user adjusts a visual style property on the panel, the style palette group will be displayed automatically. Using palettes: In this version, users can easily create new tool palette items based on existing geometric shapes, and it doesn’t matter if the tool palette to which you want to add the tool is not currently active. When a user drags an object from the graphics area to an inactive tool palette, AutoCAD automatically activates it so that the user can place the object in the appropriate location. Users can customize the icons associated with tools in the tool palette by selecting the new “Specify Image” menu option from the menu that appears when right-clicking on the tool. If the user no longer wishes to use the selected image as the icon for this tool, it can be removed using the right-click menu option; once removed, the default image will be restored. When users change the positions of tools on the tool palette, their order is retained in the tool catalog (unless the catalog file is read-only) as well as in the configuration file. This way, users do not need to manually adjust the tools in order to share your tool palette with others. The new TPNAVIGATE command allows tool palettes or groups of tool palettes to be set via the command line. Custom User Interface: The Custom User Interface (CUI) dialog has been updated to be more powerful and easier to use. The pane headers, borders, separators, buttons, and tooltips have been enhanced to make it easier for users to understand and explore the controls and data available in the CUI dialog boxes. With the CUI dialog open, users can directly drag and drop buttons on the toolbar to rearrange or delete them. Additionally, users can copy, paste, or duplicate elements such as commands, menus, and toolbars in the CUI. The command list screen includes a new search tool, allowing users to filter by the name of the command they are looking for. Users can simply move the mouse over a command name to view the macros associated with that command, or they can drag a command from the command list and drop it onto the toolbar. The new panel node allows users to customize the palettes in AutoCAD panels. The custom panel palette is very similar to the custom toolbar; it can be edited in the CUI dialog box or directly within the panel. Additionally, users can create a new tool row in the panel palette by dragging a toolbar from a tool node to a panel node. When a user selects a toolbar or panel in the custom tree, the selected element will be displayed in preview mode on the preview screen. Users can directly drag commands from the custom tree or command list and drop them onto the toolbar/screen preview. Users can drag tools on the preview screen to rearrange or delete them. If a tool is selected on the preview screen, the tools associated with it in the custom tree and command list will automatically be selected. Similarly, once a tool is selected in the custom tree, the corresponding tool in the preview screen and in the command list will also be automatically highlighted. The button image screen displays the name of the image file below the icon preview; when the mouse hovers over the image, a tooltip shows the name of each button icon. When a user accesses the CUO dialog box by using the custom items in the right-click menu on the toolbar, tool palette, or panel screen, a simplified dialog box is opened that displays only a list of commands. The new QUICKCUI command can also be used to access a simplified version of the CUI. Using DGN files: Spago can bind V8 DGN files to AutoCAD drawings; they can be managed as external references, or the DGN data can be imported directly into the AutoCAD drawings. DWG files can also be exported as V8 DGN. The new DGNATTACH command can be used to bind a DGN file as an external reference base map to an AutoCAD drawing. After binding a DGN file, it appears in the external reference dialog box just like other external reference files such as images, DWG xrefs, and DWF base maps. The new DGNCLIP command can be used to trim the display area of DGN base maps, while the property palette or the DGNADJUST command can be used to adjust the properties of DGN base maps, including contrast, desaturation, and hue. The new DGNIMPORT and DGNEXPORT commands can be used to import V8 DGN data as new DWG data into the user’s AutoCAD session. Support for the V8 DGN file format has also been added to the list of supported files for the IMPORT and EXPORT commands. Using DWF files: The visibility of layers can be controlled in the DWF base map. Using external reference files: XCLIP adds an option to reverse the selected boundaries. Using blocks: When the mouse is moved over the grip of a dynamic block, the associated parameters are displayed as tool tips. The block definition can be quickly updated to match the selected block in the tool palette using the redefine option in the right-click menu. Fixing graphic files: New command RECOVERALL: Select a corrupted DWG file, and it automatically runs the repair process for that file as well as its related external reference files. Manage Layers: Layer dialog box: A new “Settings” button has been added to display the layer settings dialog box, providing more convenient control. The properties of each column in a layer can be turned on or off, and their left and right positions can also be adjusted by dragging. A button to create a new layer has been added. Layers can use different colors, line types, line weights, print styles, etc., in different layout viewports. Others: The model space label can be modified by double-clicking it, just like in Excel.
