How far can a 4~20mA analog signal be transmitted?

How far can a 4~20mA analog signal be transmitted? How many meters is a 1.5-square-meter line stable for transmitting over? What about 2.5 square meters? Is 1000 meters okay?
Our 2.5 unit can transmit over 600 meters; the key factor is whether the voltage drop at 24V is sufficient to power the transmitter. A pure current signal should be able to travel 1000 meters.
From a design perspective, I generally don’t use 4–20mA when the distance exceeds around 700 meters; instead, I opt for a bus system.
