The Chinese Academy of Sciences reported on October 13 that new progress has been made in the methanation technology for coal-to-natural gas production at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. On October 9, the industrial pilot plant for coal-to-natural gas methanation with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters per day, designed by the research team in energy and environmental engineering led by Researcher Wang Shudong from the Clean Energy Laboratory, operated continuously and stably for over 1,000 hours under the conditions provided by the Yima Gasification Plant in Henan Province. This is another technological breakthrough by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in the field of clean coal utilization. Compared with other coal chemical routes, coal-to-natural gas has advantages such as a shorter process flow, lower water consumption, and higher energy efficiency, making it one of the preferred methods for coal conversion in China. Especially in the coal-producing provinces in the central and western regions of our country, where water resources are relatively scarce while coal resources are abundant, this approach offers significant technical advantages and great potential for widespread adoption. After nearly 5 years of intensive research, scientists at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics have successfully developed a fully methanized catalyst with high-temperature and hydrothermal stability, completing 8,000 hours of lifespan tests in the laboratory. On this basis, the Energy and Environmental Engineering Team independently designed and integrated a pilot-scale plant for the complete methanization of syngas, and **met all the technical specifications under the industrial gas conditions of the Yima Gasification Plant in Henan. The successful operation of this device lays a solid foundation for its future industrial application. The descriptions above are too vague; against which company was it compared, and to what extent was this achieved? I really don’t know where the conclusion comes from? I don’t know whether to rejoice or sigh!
It’s the same everywhere in the country; only through tangible progress and actual contact can one know for sure.
At present, methanation technology in China is still in the research and development stage, with no records of industrial application. It is hoped that the methanation technology developed independently in China will soon move towards industrialization.
Foreign technologies also lack any practical industrial application; the Lurgi technology dates back to over 20 years ago. The main concern is that the reports in China may be inaccurate.
