When SO2 and O2 are mixed in a volume ratio of 1:3, they are introduced into a contact chamber where the reaction 2SO2(g) + O2(g) ⇌ 2SO3(g) takes place. At equilibrium, under the same temperature and pressure, the ratio of the densities of the mixture before and after the reaction is found to be 71:80. What is the conversion rate of SO2? The answer to the previous question on the 13th: The reaction of adding quicklime to sulfur-containing coal to \"fix sulfur\" is CaO + SO2 → CaSO3, and 2CaSO3 + O2 → 2CaSO4. Since the ratio of the densities of gases is equal to the inverse ratio of their volumes, we have:
71 : 80 = (4 – x) : 4
x = 0.45 L. Therefore, the amount of sulfur dioxide that has converted is 0.9 L. The conversion rate of sulfur dioxide is:
0.9 L ÷ 1 L × 100% = 90%
