Carbonylation synthesis is widely used; currently, coal-based ethylene glycol is produced via this process. The most typical examples are probably the production of acetic acid and butanol. Acetic acid is carbonylated using methanol and carbon monoxide as raw materials ； Butanol is carbonylated using propylene and carbon monoxide as raw materials.
