Why must hydrogenation exhaust gases be cooled and dehumidified using a quench tower? Can other types of heat exchange be used? What is the appropriate temperature of the process gas before it enters the tower, and why?
Reply 1# Sideline: The quench tower is a facility used for cooling and washing the exhaust gases after hydrogenation. Its main purpose is to reduce the temperature of these exhaust gases to around 40 degrees, which is the optimal temperature for MDEA to absorb hydrogen sulfide. At the same time, it removes impurities through washing, thereby protecting the amine absorption system. If it is a heat exchanger, it cannot remove impurities. The exhaust gas temperature at the inlet is generally between 150 and 170 degrees. The main purpose of this is to prevent sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which have not been fully hydrogenated, from reacting in the pipelines and producing sulfur. If the temperature is too low, sulfur can solidify and block the pipelines; if the temperature is too high, the quench tower is unable to cool the gas to below 40 degrees, which affects the absorption process. Additionally, a large amount of water vapor enters the absorption system.
In terms of design, the main focus is on controlling the temperature entering the absorption tower to ensure optimal absorption efficiency. The inlet temperature of the quench tower is one of the factors affecting the inlet temperature of the absorption tower. Active participation

The quench tower primarily serves a water-washing function. The cooling device before the quench tower is usually a steam generator, and the steam generated has a pressure of 0.18~0.35 MPa. The temperature before and after entering the tower should be controlled between 25 and 55℃
The upstairs part refers to the steam generator, which was not included in the original design. It is best to design the inlet temperature to be below 60 degrees.
