It should be done in the atmospheric and vacuum distillation units – by addressing the issue at its source, everything downstream will work more smoothly. Mainly desalination and dehydration. The issue at hand is corrosion prevention. Additionally, there is a concern that salt may precipitate and clog the trays, affecting the distillation efficiency. The presence of water increases the solubility of salts; furthermore, it raises the heat required, increasing energy consumption.
Generally, electrodesalination is applied in atmospheric and vacuum distillation units. Its purpose is to use a high-voltage electric field to remove salts, heavy metals, and water from crude oil, thereby reducing corrosion in subsequent units and preventing catalyst poisoning in downstream processing units. Some refineries incorporate electrodialysis after the catalytic unit in order to remove heavy metals, salts, calcium, and other substances from the wax oil feedstock.
Devices that require electrodialysis include atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, coking units operating as independent systems, and condensate oil analysis devices, among others! The main purpose is desalination and dehydration, in order to provide high-quality raw materials for downstream units.
