Why must the inlet valve of a screw compressor be closed at startup?

The machine here automatically opens the butterfly valve 12 seconds after it is turned on; is this done to prevent excessive load on the compressor when it starts up, or what’s the reason?

The inlet valve of the screw compressor should open automatically when it starts up, in order to prevent excessive load on the compressor during startup. Your machine automatically opens the butterfly valve 12 seconds after it is turned on; this delay is way too long. The delay in opening the valve is due to the device being in the unloading mode. As far as I know, the intake valve should open automatically after 3-5 seconds.
