If emulsification is needed, isn’t it sufficient to use a combination of common emulsifiers?
As we all know, water is a polar compound, while petroleum products are composed of non-polar hydrocarbons; therefore, water and oil are immiscible with each other. To turn these two into a mixture, external force or the addition of surfactants is required to ensure that one liquid phase is evenly dispersed within the other, resulting in a relatively stable mixture. In fine chemistry, such a mixture is known as an emulsion; an emulsion composed of fuel oils (kerosene, gasoline, diesel, heavy oil, residue) and water is referred to as emulsified fuel. Like ordinary emulsions, emulsified fuel oils are also divided into water-in-oil (W/O) and oil-in-water (O/W) types. In water-in-oil emulsified fuel oils, water is uniformly suspended in the oil as the dispersed phase, which is referred to as the dispersed phase or inner phase, while the fuel oil forms the outer layer surrounding the water droplets, serving as the continuous phase or outer phase. Most of the emulsified fuel oils we see today are water-in-oil type emulsified fuels. Oil-in-water emulsified fuel oil is the exact opposite of water-in-oil type; Orin oil, developed by PDVSA, belongs to the oil-in-water emulsified fuel oil category.
