When I tested samples containing nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen, I used chromium powder since I didn’t have a nitrogen-determination alloy, and followed the old standards strictly – why couldn’t I get a result? After that, I used potassium nitrate as a sample for testing; the first result was only 0.8%. I suspected that the heating temperature wasn’t high enough or fast enough, so I replaced the electric heating mantle with an electric furnace, and this time the result was 8%. Finally, I asked for advice in a forum, where it was suggested that the sample should be boiled dry. After doing that, the result was again only 3%. What’s going on here? Also, what is the actual nature of this reaction? Nitrate nitrogen isn’t reduced to nitric oxide or anything like that, right? I’m seeking help from experts; it’s been bothering me for days. Do you know the chemical properties of chromium? A dense film forms on the surface of metallic chromium in air, and it remains unreactive unless hydrochloric acid is used as a medium (or, in some cases, dilute sulfuric acid, as I have tried).
