The fact that titanium tetrachloride produces a lot of smoke when exposed to air is one of its basic properties; this represents a challenge in the industry dealing with titanium tetrachloride. Only by improving manufacturing processes, enhancing the skills of workers, and reducing leaks can we address this issue. If titanium tetrachloride is exposed only to an anhydrous atmosphere, it does not produce much smoke (it does not hydrolyze). However, moisture in the air is inevitable; as a result, titanium tetrachloride absorbs water vigorously and undergoes hydrolysis to produce hydrogen chloride, which then combines with water to form acidic mist, giving the appearance of smoke. When handling titanium tetrachloride, care must be taken to prevent it from coming into contact with moisture.

During the production of titanium tetrachloride, contact with air leads to the formation of TiO2 and HCl; HCl combines with water vapor to create white acid mist – what is commonly referred to as smoke. Reducing contact with air during production can help minimize this smoking phenomenon. Currently, the problem arises frequently because the covers have to be opened often to replace the filter media. If the filtration process for pure titanium tetrachloride can be carried out in a sealed environment, allowing the covers to remain closed for extended periods, then smoking can be reduced. Titanium tetrachloride hydrolyzes in air to form acid mist, and this cannot be changed. The only thing that can be changed is to improve the level of equipment management, on-site management, and process management in order to reduce the occurrence of such incidents!

Try to use it in a dry environment to minimize exposure to the atmosphere! Open the lid quickly, cover it with a dry cloth, and transfer the material directly to the reaction vessel via vacuum! Rinse the sampling tube thoroughly with water immediately after use!
