As the New Year approaches, there are tons of taxis available. Yesterday I went to a supermarket to buy some goods for the New Year; there was a lot to carry, so I wanted to take a taxi home. Normally, the fare is around 11 or 12 yuan. I asked one driver, but he refused to use a meter and demanded 20 yuan right away. Another driver asked 30 yuan, and he seemed unwilling to go if I didn’t agree to that price. Also, a few years ago when I returned to my hometown, the usual fare to get there was 25 yuan, but during the New Year it rose to 100 yuan; some long-distance buses are the same way. I remember when I went home last year, the long-distance buses didn’t stop at the station at all; people had to wait outside. Since there were no buses available inside the station, tickets couldn’t be sold for the time being. It cost 50 yuan per person to take a bus home, whereas normally it’s only 25 yuan. We go home for the New Year, and they take this opportunity to overcharge us severely, just like they do when slaughtering pigs during the New Year.
